Understanding Mobile Campaign Data: Clicks and Sessions Explained

Why session counts and click counts don't always match, especially on Meta campaigns.

If you're reviewing campaign reports and notice session counts don't perfectly match click counts, this is expected behavior, especially for Meta (Facebook/Instagram) traffic.

How it works:

  • Direct to app: when a user clicks a link and opens your app directly, that's typically recorded as a single app session.
  • The Meta experience: when a user clicks a link inside the Facebook or Instagram app, Meta opens it in its own in-app browser first (required for their tracking compliance). This can register as a mobile web session. If the user then launches your app from that page, a separate app session is also recorded — meaning one click can produce two sessions.

Key metrics to focus on instead of raw session counts:

  • For affiliates: earnings per click — since URLgenius is your source of truth for clicks and your retail partner is your source of truth for earnings, this ratio is a better success indicator than session count alone.
  • For Marketplace sellers: Return on Ad Spend (ROAS) — the most reliable measure of campaign profitability, provided you have conversion tracking in place across both web and app.

Note on unusually high Meta numbers: Meta's "Link Clicks" metric counts more than just link taps — it also includes post likes, comments, shares, profile clicks, and media expansions tied to the ad. Posts with high engagement can show inflated click numbers as a result.
